RETURN OF MASH-UP

 <date>2006-10-25 11:56:45</date>

Saturday 9 December from 10 p.m.

At the Embobineuse - 11, Boulevard Boués 13003 Marseille
Entrance 8 Euros + 1 Euro membership

Return of Mash-Up

The mash-up/breakcore scene has been one of the most exciting of these last five years. So it's not surprising that numerous electronic arts festivals regularly programme this forerunning beat breaker.
At our first mash-up evening in November 2005, we hosted its most significant representatives. This year RIAM invites two mash-up/breakcore activists: Bong-Ra and Shitmat who were both scheduled last year and both absent at the last moment... Let's hope that this year they'll be on time for an energy fuelled evening.
Urtikr from Marseille will open the night but the last word is reserved for DJ Wet, doing a DJ set which remains a closely guarded secret.

URTIKR (Fr)

Trio formed by Jon aka Stereo Warfare, Melissa (music) and Celine (video). URTIKR plays a mutant noise spread with Hip-Hop breaks. Influenced by situationist distortions, concrete and industrial music, a strange wrenching sound, coated with powerful bass, interacts with sublime and ridiculous images multiplying interpretations and scrambling maps of improbable lands.

BONG-RA (NL: Clash records, Ad noiseam),

Revealed in 2001 by John Peel during one of his renowned sessions, Jason Kohnen became Bong Ra in 1996 and participated actively in the emancipation of the hardcore breakbeat territory through several labels such as Djax, Planet Mu, Supertraks or Deathsucker. Continually seeking sounds and spaces, Bong Ra, machine dervish, flirts with jungle, rave, metal, dancehall, gabber and fat rock.
Reputed for his more than live performances of speed jungle enamelled with subverted samples, or dance-music and electro just as deconstructed and energetic, he will be live accompanied for the occasion with his bass.

www.bong-ra.com

SHITMAT (UK: Planet-Mu, wrong music)

Henry Collins aka Shitmat, the sole exponent of “Mashcore”, a term which he invented, doesn't go lightly on his listeners. With more than 200 samples per minute, the exercise consists in sorting and amusing us with a monumental collective Blind test.
Shitmat is waging war on copyright. That's why he's capable of superposing on the entire album Killababylonkutz the Babylon Bwoy acapella by Baby Cham on All That She Wants by Ace of Base or Eye of the Tiger by Survivor mixed with the Benny Hill theme or the Michael Jackson best of. Like a John Oswald, the inventor of plunderphonics, who tempted the music industry's wrath by sampling the King of Pop's hits.

www.shitmat.co.uk

Dj Wet (Fr)

A well-informed music enthusiast, a demanding DJ who doesn't tolerate soggy mixes, Wet follows her own instincts and good-humouredly distils sets containing techno delicacies, house sultriness, booty forcibly gravely and libidinous electro. Her objective at the present time is to cross the club threshold with the most experimental of electronic artists from Aphex Twin to Mike Paradinas. “All out for energy!”
With DJ Ai she is a member of the Important Youth Movement project out on Wwilko. In particular she has been setting it up at the Lieu Unique (Nantes), the Batofar (Paris), at Mains d'Oeuvres (St Ouen) and at the best venues in Holland, Switzerland and Belgium.

Jean-Patrick Pelletier (Fr)

The artist Jean-Patrick Pelletier creats total immersion devices for spectators in a given environment. These multi-projections repaint spaces with a coloured and luminous ambiance thanks to a multitude of media sources which, projected on the spectator give an impression of “dance in white” dear to Man Ray. For this evening the Embobineuse venue will be lit up with these devices.

www.documentsdartistes.org

Benoit Broisat [Fr]

SMP Gallery - 61, rue Consolat, 13001 Marseille from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Benoît BROISAT (FR) Video Installation

“I have never believed that the role of the image is to reproduce a pre-existing reality”. Benoît Broisat is interested in the way in which “the media report invents the event which it documents, the story constructs the place it purports to describe, and the way in which our memory itself, instead of restituting moments from the past, elaborates its own facts, its own landscapes”. The artist was the revelation of the exhibition I still believe in miracles - Drawings without paper (at the Paris Modern Art Museum), in which he combined drawing and electronic work. Refusing the idea that drawing is a preparatory step in the elaboration of a more complete form (like painting), the artist insists on its character as opening - supple and unachieved. Drawing however is envisaged more as a theme than as a practice, recycling and subverting genres linked to the practice of drawing (animation, graffiti, video games or press illustrations).
The video Bonneville (2005), drawing its name from the town of birth of the artist, constitutes a transformation into image of his memory, an attempt to restitute a tie felt towards memories of space and location. Sensations have left the place to a collection vague with traces, signs slowly drained of their signification. A slow and silent ramble in black and white timed by a fall of monotone snow. In Los Angeles the athlete Daley Thompson, long jumping during the 1984 Olympic Games, seems to be suspended in the air, an apotheosis transforming him into an immobile statue. With Anaglyphs, we are invited to put on 3D glasses and look at press illustrations linked to armed conflict. The project Franz List Square seeks to construct representations of this Parisian structural pause basing itself exclusively on the accounts gleaned from its inhabitants.
Benoît Broisat has just been named for the Ricard prize for young French artists. He has exhibited at the Caixa Forum and the Santa Monica Arts Center (Barcelona), at Fresnoy, at the Cimaise et Portique Arts Centre (Albi), at Fri-Art (Fribourg), FRAC Champagne-Ardenne or at La Station, Nice.

From Wednesday 4 December to 15 December

ZINC/ECM Friche la Belle de Mai - 41, rue Jobin, 13003 Marseille

Public presentation on Friday 15 December at the restaurant of the Friche la Belle de Mai. Reserve in advance.

APO 33 (FR) - Le Poulpe Workshop

APO33 is an artistic, technologic and theoretical laboratory based in Nantes and working in the fields of audio art, freeware and collaborative practices, micromedia and urban and environmental mutations. Their collective approach combines research, experimentation and action in the social sphere.
www.apo33.org

Le POULPE de Marseille : a CIA action
The CIA (Cell for Intervention by APO33) is an artists' collective for experimental sonic creation, which operates through the creation of web-radios, the assembly of server networks and collaborative platforms. The CIA mostly uses the radio as its battle-ground and as the media through which to articulate its interventions. Le POULPE is a proposition for a constellation of happenings in Marseille for the space of a week. The CIA initiative is to create a network of radio/webradio broadcasts at different places in the city, to interconnect them and to propose aleatory and automated radiophonic broadcasts on the Radio Grenouille channel. In the different tentacles of Le POULPE (poulpe = octopus) there is a sampling variant (neighbourhood ambiance, sounds of material and social architecture, etc) fed into a broadcasting channel (Radio Grenouille) which the inhabitants of the city can then listen to.
Le POULPE is a networked digital and analogical organism. Each tentacle forms a sound installation which, when implanted in a place, captures the sonic effects generated by the activity of the place and then transmits them to a local digital automaton before broadcasting them simultaneously in situ and in streaming media through internet. Le POULPE infiltrates the places where the city's inhabitants carry out that act which is living, it forms the virtual body of the city, expressing through sound the invisible movements, the collection of flux which cross and constitute the city. Le POULPE unravels its tentacles to join contexts which in turn exchange their sound flux via internet, immersing in and modifying the environment. The objective is to re-appropriate knowledge of media and interfaces so as to reinvent them, while at the same time reflecting on the symbolic, social and political repercussions of these practices. This artistic action group has taken on the mission of reinventing situations and contexts in which it is hosted.
The group has created the Fibrr label, envisaged as an extension to CD of their artistic research. Each live recording gives place to the reworking of the audio material.

	Workshop / Action / Installation
ZINC/ECM proposes a workshop with APO33 around the notion of the soundscape and urban audio installation. It is open to a dozen people interested by radio and experimental sound creation.
Webradio creation (in collaboration with Radio Grenouille)
Creation of a networked sound installation

Thursday 30 November at 9p.m.

Montevideo - 3, impasse Montevideo, 13006 Marseille

Tariff : 5 Euros for members, 7 Euros reduced tariff and 9 Euros full price

Pierre Belouin (Fr)

Session to listen to the project Awan-Siguawini - - Spemki---

Pierre Belouin is a founder member of the Glassbox Gallery in Paris and of the Optical Sound label created in 1997, following a meeting with Rainier Lericolais.
This publishing platform seeks to broadcast audio artworks by plastic artists experimenting in sound or, on the other hand, musicians interested in plastic arts. The name Optical Sound is a direct reference to cinema, to the sonic optical track, evoking mental images generated by sound. “It is possible that the musical evolution of the next century is less partitioned. If the all-powerful big labels haven't taken total control of the internet by that time, we can expect a positive development of the independent and auto-produced network. And why not imagine musical movements which are more and more precise and numerous, gathering together small groups of aficionados from time to time?” The activities of the label concern publishing (CD, vinyl, DVD, artists' badges), the organisation of events with other labels (Aspic Records, Erratum ...) and artistic structures (Labomatic, Rhinoceros, Quatre.4.O-Artefact, Arcadi, City Sonics).
In L'homme orchestre (v.2 Exotica), Belouin places himself in front of the camera through self portraits cloned from a photo where he simultaneously takes on the role of guitarist, drummer, bassist also playing the synthesiser and the guïro (a Mexican instrument). It's the reconstitution of a Surf N' Exotica orchestra which makes a pastiche of that out-of-date current of heady post-war 50's America - today recuperated by the musical industry with the vintage label “easy-listening”. The installation is accompanied with a soundtrack created by Yann Jaffiol (Ultra Milkmaids) and was presented recently at the Magda Danyzs gallery.

AWAN - SIGUAWINI - - SPEMKI ---

This installation parallels eight “landscape” photographs with the “audio landscapes” that the artist has sampled from each place photographed. This proposition was transmitted to French sonic-plastic artists, who then created an audio free-interpretation inspired by the photo. Here we are fully in the realm of the mental landscape, the waking dream, a tentative synaesthetics, provoking a freedom of interpretation and divagation. The title of these sound photographs signifies in Abenaki “air/in spring/paradise”. So as to conserve the first impression of his discovery of the Alma site (Canada) during his artist's residence, Belouin worked with the words House, Forest, Lake, Factory. The “photographic sketches” were put on Internet, destined for his homologue p.n. Ledoux who for the occasion put himself in the shoes of Pierre Belouin by writing his private diary (a catalogue was edited by the FRAC for Alsace and Côte d'Azur regions in collaboration with Langage Plus).
Original soundtracks by J.L. Norscq, C. Demarthe, Y. Jaffiol, N. Germain, R. Matta, S. Roux, E. Ladoire, L. Mouillet, R. Lericolais, Servovalve and Wild Shores.

Danaïdes Brasserie - 6, square Stalingrad, 13001 Marseille

Marcus KREISS (DE) - Video installation

After Eric Satie's “background” music, Souvenirs from the Earth, proposes video-painting, paintings in movement to be watched rather than looked at. Created in collaboration with Larry Kriv in 2001 in Cologne and Paris, these images explore the possibilities of video liberated from its servitude to sound and narration. In a science-fiction vision, these videos find their ideal broadcasting channel via the television. It's been done with the creation in 2006 of the first TV channel emitting 24/24 a video art programme on the local network of the Stuttgart and Cologne region. Minimalist hypnotic murmurs with Kreiss filming at camp sites, at the beach or on ice; images being slowed, overexposed, blurred or in extreme close up, using the travelling shot like a loop.
Having been involved in Cinecitta, Marcus Kreiss has conceived video scenographies for concerts by Jay Jay Johannson or Jimi Tenor. His works are shown in the collections of the National Contemporary Arts Foundation, the FRAC Alsace, the Deutsche Bank Collection (Frankfurt) or in the Lambert Collection.

Opening of exhibitions on Tuesday 28 November from 6 p.m.

Buy-Self Art Club Gallery - 101, rue Consolat, 13001 Marseille

Bertrand LAMARCHE (FR) Video Installation

In one of his last performances, the subject was the upturned image of a cyclone, in an indefinable context, between cloudy sky and desert. Vortex Lounge is an event with neither narration nor beginning nor end. A meteorological phenomenon takes place in the exhibition room. An effect for a Hollywood disaster blockbuster where everything is revealed. The performance itself borrows from the codes of a DJ set: a turntable put on slow-mo, no vinyl, the needle sliding over the rubber giving off sighs, static, tearing. A cylinder filled with water, then spun, induces a whirlpool whose spirals catch debris: a “vortex machine” equipped with video camera projects images of a landscape transformed into hypnotic chaos. Image and sound function in symbiosis, raising each other to a higher power.
Bertrand Lamarche shows a particular interest in “whirlpools” and “vortices” through devices with produce effects of ambience, total-immersion, subverting household materials and hardware. He is fascinated by thresholds, openings to infinity: whirlwinds, maelstroms and tidal waters, vortices or again gigantic urban agglomerations, the cities of tomorrow sometimes calling to mind playthings or giant models. He focuses on “hollow bodies”, pockets of emptiness existing in the real: tunnels, demolition sites, quarries but also tornados, black holes and ditches or channels of smaller dimensions. The artist composes realist chimeras, concretising a vision, having architecture as his principal subject, pushing into the foreground the points linking utopia and reality.

STAALPLAAT SOUND SYSTEM [De]

Montevideo - 3, impasse Montevideo, 13006 Marseille

Tariff : 5 Euros for members, 7 Euros reduced tariff and 9 Euros full price

STAALPLAAT SOUND SYSTEM (DE) - Yokomono Performance 30 minutes

Staalplaat creates mechanical orchestras by using all sorts of domestic hardware, by programming and composing specifically for them. After a symphony for refrigerators this artists' collective has organised a performance for vacuum cleaners, dancing like a rave in the middle of a concert hall. It's a technological DIY philosophy and aesthetic, rewiring the functional usage of these household machines to make them dance, sing or percuss.
Counting down from the spectacular deployment of technology, Staalplaat creates sonic compositions with banal mechanical tools, conjugating their apparent simplicity with caustic humour. An approach which takes us back to a century-old tradition of noise machines and mad inventors.
Staalplaat was first noticed during a performance in Berlin in which an orchestra floated with hoovers, plastic bottles and light - a technical prowess unifying water and electronics. Other installations integrated the public in the audio compositions (using portable phones) or constituted personal modules for sonic therapy. They could be linked to the Fluxus movement, but combining mechanical and acoustic elements within the dynamics of the DJ culture.
The Staalplaat label and LP composant, created in Amsterdam and based in Berlin, has officiated in the realm of industrial, electronic and experimental music for over twenty years.

Yokomono, (Staalplaat Mono Erosive Surround Sound Installation) brings in toys or rather vinyl killers. Which is to say little red cars equipped with a sapphire (we couldn't really call it a reading head ...). These cars are placed on a dozen LP's which each have hundreds of loops, multiplying to infinity the audio combinations. Red translucid vinyls are in “DJ Tool” format. On one side, samples are looped (sirens, bleeps, clicks, etc ...), on the other side there are loops specially signed by Freiband, Jim O'Rourke, Kozo Inada, Massimo, Pimmon, Rechenzentrum etc. Next, this device interacts with 200 FM receivers hanging from the ceiling. Everything is then linked to a mixing table which allows a set to be constructed from this raw material or equally to insert other sources, noises or additional loops. The result, musically, is close to the turntabilism of Philip Jeck or Saule.
